Graduate School Admission Results

Very interesting email... Dear applicant, This is a mass email to all of you, approximately 250 people, who applied to our PhD program this year. We just had our first meeting and have now sent out offers to 15 of you. Thus, if you have not received such an email, you are unfortunately not a first-round choice, but you are on our waiting list. We will know the outcomes of the first round between now and around 10 days from now; normally, the fraction of acceptances is somewhere around 50%. As we receive rejections, we immediately proceed to give new offers. We have no pre-set order of how this will occur, but if you are very interested in an offer from us and have a deadline elsewhere, please let us know at your earliest convenience. My status just changed from "Under Program Review" into "Under Grad School Review." Is someone experiencing the same thing? What does it mean exactly???

Not sure if waitlisted, but not yet rejected. I asked for updates and they told me that they are waiting for the decision of those who got offered admission until April 15. If there are still any space available after April 15, they will make additional offers before May 1st.

Email to check portal. Finally got an offer after tons of rejections and waiting lists. If getting into better schools via a waiting list, will decline.

(Not interview) Honestly so frustrating the schools do not explicitly tell about the policies that literally make applying to them almost pointless. I did not know about either the huge cut on Harvard's cohort or the absence of funding in UPenn. How do I know this without having any fellow faculty members there or just randomly getting the info? They could have posted it on the website and in the application form, but that's too much work for them apparently

GPA = 3.7/4.0 grad econ. 1r/1wl/0ad/1p. It's not clear, as two admissions are posted here, but graduate program director informs that they are working through applications. How is this possible?

Got an email saying my status would be updated on Tuesday, got the update to rejection today. I have a Master's, undergraduate publication, some analyst experience, and a paper under review with some professors from my alma mater, a pretty low-tier state school. Not surprising. But this is the first school I've heard from so we'll see how the rest go.

The Economics Admissions Committee has reviewed your application and in a typical year we would have been very excited to recommend to the School of Arts and Sciences Graduate Division of the University of Pennsylvania to admit you to our Ph.D. program and offer you funding. However, due to the financial impact of the Covid pandemic, we are not authorized by the School to admit anyone with funding from the School this year. We do, however, expect to assemble a very strong incoming class consisting of individuals who will have outside funding initially and the Department will use its internal funds to support most students starting in their second or third year in the program. To help us plan, could you please answer the following two questions: 1. Do you have or expect to receive any outside funding that can be used to fund one or more years in the Penn Ph.D. program (both tuition and living expenses)? Could you please provide any details about this funding, e.g., source, amount, duration, etc. 2. Given our inability to fund you early on in the program, are you still interested in potentially joining our program or have other alternatives that would dominate UPenn given the unfortunate circumstances?
