Currently in waitlist purgatory! Any news from this school? Originally waitlisted but have not been told any information since. Any insights?

SOOO... U of H is my ideal choice. I have family members whose health is declining, so I really needed to be home. On April 15th, I accepted an offer from another school because I didn't think UH would end up accepting me. The other school is more than twice the distance from my home and I was already having anxiety about the commuting/other financial, transportation, and family issues. I was considering letting them know I didn't think I could do the program after all and taking a year off. Then, UH e-mailed me on Friday that I'd been accepted off the waitlist. My heart says I need to go ahead and let the other school know I need to move in a different direction although words can't explain how bad I feel about accepting then rejecting an offer. Any thoughts or comments are appreciated but keep in mind that the ideal situation is that I don't have to go back on my word... but at what point is this more important than my living needs? idk.

To the poster below: I did not apply to Houston, but this exact situation just happened to me. I had originally lost hope on getting into my top pick program, and accepted another offer a couple days before the deadline. But then, one day after the deadline, I got a call from my top choice program and they offered me admission. When I told them I was interested but had already accepted another offer, they made it sound like people withdrawal themselves from their original program all the time. The protocol that I was told to follow was to call them first and then follow it up with an email saying that you would like to withdrawal yourself, so that they have it in writing. This does happen frequently and schools know this! My original school understood and handled it professionally. Really, it was no big deal. Do what’s best for you!! But if you do want to accept your new offer, I’d let your original program know quickly so that way they can move on to the next person on their waitlist.

I just withdrew my spot in the Fall 2019 cohort to attend a school that is cheaper and closer by. I hope this helps someone on the waitlist. Don’t give up hope!
