On behalf of the Computer Science faculty, we would like to express our appreciation for your interest in the graduate programs in the Whiting School of Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer you admission into the program at this time. There was a very large number of applications this year and intense competition for the limited number of admissions slots available.

TTPB: The cost of attendance makes me think it's a cash cow program. It doesn't seem worth it since Eisner's page explicitly states that "Sometimes MSE students apply to transfer to the Ph.D. program. This is occasionally successful."

TTPB: That's what I've been worrying as well. I applied mainly to PhD positions and cloned to MS applications where possible. I'm in industry and consider my lack of PhD acceptances as evidence that I need to make a major change to get back on that track. My intuition is that excelling at an MS and making good connections at JHU would be sufficient to get a relatively strong PhD offer somewhere, but it might not be the most cost-effective path. Interested in hearing everyones thoughts on this and alternatives

Graduate Full-Time Tuition comes out to $110,700 over two years. What are your thoughts on using an MS as a Ph.D. prep? That's a lot of money for me personally.

Aiming for NLP/HLT concentration. Some research and short publications in another field, with one research project in NLP. First admit, hope is not lost! Cloned my JHU PhD application to this program. I intend to ask advising this, but any thoughts on how well the JHU MS stacks for PhD application prep? Seems my big shortcoming is lack of extensive research experience in NLP, want to make sure this is a sound approach for closing the gap before investing so much time and money
