Journalism, Columbia University 10 years experience > a couple internships in college. Apply when you HAVE work experience. Of course you could not have had 10 years experience in college, but graduating and then working in the real world would allow you to gain that experience. I suggest you never take the LSAT, because your logic is terrible.

Journalism, Columbia University Re: experience/lack thereof, my impression is that it's not only about having journalism experience. I was admitted to the broadcast concentration with pretty no journalistic writing experience. I interned at a magazine in college and worked at a different small magazine on the editorial side for 3 years after graduating, and now work in nonprofit. Columbia only takes about 1/3 of the class straight from undergrad. Having any sort of work experience will strengthen your app & show a breadth of interest.

Journalism, Columbia University When your letter mentions "journalism experience" it does not mean an "intensive five month INTERNSHIP." I know a few people who got in and some of them have YEARS of work experience, ie. 10 years in DC working for Reuters. An internship is not a replacement for actually working in the field of journalism as a professional.
