Re: experience/lack thereof, my impression is that it's not only about having journalism experience. I was admitted to the broadcast concentration with pretty no journalistic writing experience. I interned at a magazine in college and worked at a different small magazine on the editorial side for 3 years after graduating, and now work in nonprofit. Columbia only takes about 1/3 of the class straight from undergrad. Having any sort of work experience will strengthen your app & show a breadth of interest.
