TTPB: I can also navigate to the page with the letter by clicking Main Menu -> Admissions -> Student Center - New Grad. There is the "NAME Graduate Student Center" page with five sections: Welcome ("Congratulations on your admission to the University of Massachusetts Amherst!"), Confirmation Status (and here's the link to the letter), Graduate Student Employment, Financial Aid, and Contact Information. And on the right side of the page, there is a small box "Search for Classes" and under it another section "Grad Student Resources" with the link to "Check Status of Application Materials." I am pretty sure I just had the "Grad Student Resources" section (with the link to check application status) on this page last time I logged on to spire.

Where do you think I fall in the percentage? Background: Big State School EE Undergrad 3.8 GPA Latin Honors, wanting CS PhD, Skipped GRE, 1 REU + Undergrad research projects, Compelling essay (first gen college student) with passion and diversity focus, undergrad TA experience, EE internship at no name company, decent letters, what percentage would you give me and what schools should I realistically get my hopes up for? I am American with zero connections (yes its possible if your on the poor side).

Folks - let's be honest to ourselves. The acceptance rate of tier-1 MS programs like MSCS and MSML are around 6% - 8%, and will likely be lower this year due to the increase of applicants. I'd say at least 30% of the applicants think they can get in, but we need to ask ourselves - are we really the top 6%?

TTBP: I'm the same person that just asked that. I am having trouble understanding. I forgot to mention I am a UMass undergrad so my spire may have more than most people. I click on Main Menu > Admissions > Graduate Applicant Center. On that page, I see a section " Grad Student Resources" and under that one of the options is "Check Status of Application Materials" Where in this navigation should I look? I would greatly appreciate more details!

For the person who randomly checked spire and saw the letter but didn't see the status change, where did you randomly see a letter on spire?

randomly checked spire and saw the letter. haven't gotten any emails about status update. so happy :) the application status is still "update pending," but the letter and other stuff are already available.

Already have a master's in information technology, applied for HCI to settle as a UX designer in the career. Thought second masters would not hurt if it is worth bringing my favorite career stream to my table.

TTPB: I am the one who started this discussion (about not blaming the defferals). To be perfectly clear I have no connections in CMU, I know nobody in the department I applied to, I have not had contact with anyone related to my specific field. CMU has a ton of CS graduate programs and I spoke to people I am familiar with in totally unrelated programs. This isn't because your lack of connections nor defferals. Graduate admissions are a crapshoot, I got accepted to CMU.. but rejected to a totally inferior school. Stop acting like the world owes you something, and given the admissions that you mentioned you should be in cloud nine. Very few get into every school they apply to, that does not mean that the schools that reject you are rigged against you.

Does anyone know what's going on with MSML and MCDS? Any estimate when they will be out?

Have anyone applying for a masters and Esop at D-INFK (Data Science, Cyber Security) had an interview?

TTPB: While I agree with the person below about how connections matter and also about the second option of paying your way into a PhD by doing a masters at top 5-10 CS schools, I don't see connections playing a factor in the process being unique to CMU and not every school. Fuck it, not even grad schools, industry is the exact same: connections and your network matter. I would say that most people realize that after a couple years in industry but for those applying to grad schools right out of undergrad, they get to experience earlier than their peers who went to work instead of grad school. And cause of ML/AI hype, the number of applicants is so much that a person who would have been a star candidate 5-10 years ago does not get accepted this cycle or even interviewed. and to the post further below about deferrals, from every school I have interviewed with, the idea that everyone isn't getting cause of people deferring is bullshit. You just have to come terms with the fact that ML hype has made CS exponential crowded and instead of 1-2 extremely overqualified applicants (ie: 4+ NIPS/ICLR/ICML papers), you now have 20-30 of these applicants resulting into the minimum bar to get in increase dramatically. Really the only question left to see is that if this cycle was a 1 time thing or is the bar just going to exponentially increase. Here's to hoping for AI winter #3...
