hep-th, this is a weird rejection imo. called to inquire, she said more rejections will be sent out next week

Due to the large number of applications and the finite number of supported positions in our department, we are unfortunately unable to offer you a position in our graduate program starting this fall. The number of admission offers was extremely limited this year and we had to make difficult decisions. I wish I had better news and was able to write a more positive letter.
