To the posters about Middle Eastern Studies - yeah it is really cool to see you! I think it is a ever more popular course. It seems the institute is sending out PhD offers so hopefully we will follow very quickly next. I'm not too optimistic but it was worth a try! My guess is we'll hear on Monday-Wednesday next week

To the poster below, I am not the person you asked the question to but also got accepted today. I had my interview on 21st of Feb. Offer letter did not include funding information, those decisions will be sent out between mid-April and late June.

I''m the first poster of the Education DPhil offer. I was interviewed on the 23rd, actually received the email yesterday. No news on funding yet - I think nominees will be contacted soon, and then informed by April 15th.

To the anxious posters below from English/History/Philosophy/MML, as someone who is very familiar with Oxford's admissions process, I can tell you that: a) The reasons acceptances and rejections 'trickle' is because those with no hope of a place/funding are immediately rejected, those that make it through the first cull are then roughly ranked in terms of strength of application with those at the top being considered first for funding. Different SUB-FACULTIES (i.e. French, German) within the same FACULTY (MML) send out answers at the different times. And, occasionally, more offers are made than there are places, which is why other applicants hear only when stronger applicants have already rejected a place. b) Mst, Mphil and Dphil applications have different application timelines, so it is pointless to glean any information on the progress of decisions for an Mst in Modern History, for example, from another poster who is posting about a Dphil acceptance. c) Funding in the humanities is allocated by DIVISION, which is why it can take an extremely long time to hear about. The decisions require a meeting of those across the FACULTIES to negotiate over their various pots of money and try to fund as many students as possible. It is even possible (although rare) that you will be told no funding is available and then, come August, receive a funding because a funded student has turned down their place. d) Lastly, some subjects send out offer letters separate of funding offers, other subjects send them out together. It depends on the department, but is nothing to fret about.

To the poster below, the only 'sure rejection' is a letter of rejection. The fact that some have received informal offers and you haven't does not necessarily mean you are out of the running. It's possible they submitted their application before you, or that they are being considered first for funding, or even some other banal administrative reason.

Can anyone please explain how the PhD selections are made? My first interview was with admissions and then the rest of them with potential supervisors, the supervisors didn't know how I did in the first interview but from what I understand the decision is mostly made based on your first interview. This is so strange to me, in other places the supervisors make the decisions. Maybe I understood all wrong?

To the poster below asking about PhD admissions process. I didn't apply to the Physics Department, but I believe it's similar for all DPhil programs: each department/graduate school has its own graduate admissions committee, and they are the people interviewing you and making the final decision. However, one of the factors influencing the final decision is whether you have a suitable supervisor or not, i.e. you cannot usually be admitted to the program without a supervisor having approved you to work in their lab. So the supervisors will likely feedback to your first interview panel and then the panel makes the final decision. Good luck!
