Interviewed on 30 Jan and got notified today that I’m on the waitlist. I have got a PhD offer from elsewhere so I don’t think my ranking on the waitlist matters anymore. congrats to those who made it— you are far more excellent than you think!! 25Fall is unprecedentedly hard!!!

In addition to the standard rejection email, the chair of English graduate studies reached out directly to let me know that it wasn't that I was a poor applicant, but that they didn't have enough coverage in my specialty at this point in time (early modern studies).

It's probably one of the nicest rejections I have ever received. I’m sorry to report that you were not among the small group of applicants selected for admission for Fall 2025. This year we continued to see an increase in the number and quality of applications, making for an extremely competitive applicant pool. Because of budgetary compression and programmatic downsizing, we were compelled to accept a very small class. These are very difficult decisions, ones that we do not take lightly, and many promising candidates do not make it into the program in such a highly competitive environment. Please know that your work was read with care and discussed thoroughly during our meetings, and that I speak for the whole of the committee when I thank you for sharing your work with us.
