Still can't really believe this.

I'M SO EXCITED. Only applied to four schools. Huge gamble, but it paid off. Things that worked in my favor: Several national and international awards, including Gates Cambridge and Goldwater; REUs at Harvard and MIT, very strong letters, graduated summa cum laude. Things that worked against me: Not so stellar GRE scores.

Waitlist email suggests alternative plan as it's rarely possible to get off the list

Our Committee on Admissions has asked me to tell you that we have placed your application (along with about fifty others) on a "Wait List" for any openings which may occur. I am sorry that it is not possible to predict the Committee's final action; however, in the past several years we were only able to offer admission to one or two students who were on the "Wait List". Therefore, I suggest that you continue to develop alternative plans for continuing your graduate education. The competition for the very limited number of openings in our Department is quite intense, and we have already been forced to turn down many applicants with very fine records. I will notify you as soon as a final decision is reached. Final decisions will be made about the "Wait List" in the month of March.
