TPB, besides, according to EJMR (and confirmed by insiders), there are about 40+ MRes students (!) enrolled last year. It will either be a dogfight for PhD positions during the first year, or a dogfight for job market placements during the final year.

TPB, I would choose US Top 50 if I were you. For me the quality of life during PhD is important. UCL only provides about 14000 pounds per year if you work with full TA workload (450 hours per year). Without personal savings, you will live in poverty in London. On the other hand, if you are rich and cherish the good faculty and reputation of UCL, it would be fine.

TPB: I also have two other offers from Europe. One is a new program, and the other is one of the top programs in Europe (albeit not top 5). I will choose one of them. Also, I have another school pending in the UK. If you have the money, London would probably be a better experience than the top50 US school that you are accepted to.

TPB: An international student here. I have an offer of UCL MRes without any funding and a fully funded offer from top 50 in USA. Any advice on how to make a choice?

TPB: The director confirmed that my offer includes nothing for the first year (MRes). It will be impossible for me to find external funding (since I am considered overseas in the UK). I am forced to decline their offer. Good luck to the rich international kids remaining :)

Yes, got rejected for application to Year 2 (MRes) and results were sent out for the Masters as well. Seems difficult to get direct admission to PhD or MRes without doing their Masters first. At least for econ and finance graduates.

Was accepted with "up to 22,000" in funding, including teaching. Does anyone know what this means, and what the realistic stipend will be? Will we receive further detail on the funding offer? thanks!

[NOT WAITLIST] To posters below: This is exactly why I decided against applying to UCL. Using master's programs as cash cow is understandable but doing the same thing with PhDs tells you that they care more about $$$ than producing good research. I hope the wealthy international students who pay for these PhDs realize that the name brand isn't worth it. UCL Econ (don't know about the other departments) is going to become insignificant very soon

TPB: Thank you for the info. I might need to write to them and ask about my status....do you mind sharing your intended field? And were you interviewed before?
