Also never trust any CMU professor unless it is written on paper especially when it comes to funding. Don't be shocked to see results turned around otherwise.

Though they didn't mention, it probably could be my low GPA. I come from a tier-1 college from India and had more than 2 years of work experience. I was expecting an admit.

For the person comparing CMU and MILA. CMU MCDS may be one of the top programs, but the ROI sucks. To be an actual data scientist in top firms, you need a PhD. An MCDS degree would probably fetch you a job in data science teams, but doing only a portion of the work of a data scientist in full, in a team led by a proper lead data scientist who works on the actual research part. Not sure how far true this is, but it seems like for data scientist positions where it matters, PhD is the norm. Also, CMU and MILA stand no comparison. Mila pays close to 32k per year if I am not wrong, and also pays for your laptop close to 2000cad. As for the job prospects after MILA MS, it may not be as much as US, but MILA is tied to Deepmind, Google and Google brain, FAIr, Microsoft ai research, etc and many graduates also go on to work at Bengio's element startup which is one of the upcoming AI unicorns. That said, with just MS from MILA I am not sure how your chances are in working in the US Post MS. If you do a PhD at MILA, you can do a postdoc at Google brain or FAIR or some University in US and then take up industry or academia position in the US itself. In case of CMU, you'd be graduating with about 80k in debt. Mila provides you debt free graduation and also if you did impressive research work, you can even get into Google type of companies in Canada in research engineer positions and continue publishing as part of the research teams.

To the masters applicants, when are the results rolled-out? I am desperately waiting for results from Waterloo as I have to choose between masters or a job offer I have. Any information would be helpful. Thanks!

To the poster below regarding MILA v CMU: MILA all the way. It has one of the best AI/ML programs and great opportunities for research. Don't worry about jobs in the US. MILA graduates are in high demand in machine learning in all major tech companies. Ian Goodfellow completed his PhD at MILA under Yoshua Bengio and he's one of the best deep learning researchers today. He rejected Stanford for Montreal and is currently a research scientist at Google Brain.

I would like to know which choice is better 1) MILA MSCS fully funded 2) CMU MCDS with no funding From the comments I read below, if I want to pursue PhD later, MILA would be a good choice What about job scenario, will I get good opportunities in US if I do my MS in Canada?

To the poster deciding between CMU and ETH: CMU MCDS is a professional course and is in no way research/thesis based. So, your choice should depend on your immediate goal. If you want to pursue a PhD, ETH is hands down your choice. If you want to finish your masters quickly and start earning go with CMU. Its not that you cannot earn a hefty amount from the ETH degree. Your pay would be as good as that in case of CMU. So, in conclusion, ETH is in general a better choice no matter what you want to do further. Go for CMU if you want to quickly finish your masters and have enough money to pay for it. Hope it helps you choose.

To people debating on CMU, how do you weigh in on CMU MCDS vs ETH Zurich MSc ? ETHZ is a research based program and offers fast track admission to PhD after 1st semester. What do you think?
