  • To the poster below asking about ESRC/AHRC vs Cambridge Trust funding: I feel I can chime in as I was nominated for and offered full ESRC funding, though a technicality around my country of ordinary residence has meant that offer has now been rescinded. Research council funding is not more difficult to be nominated for, per se, but it does come with more conditions. For example, whereas Cambridge Trust funding is evaluated on raw academic merit, ESRC funding requires the nominating Department to also justify the funding on the grounds of research fit within a pre-defined theme (at Cambridge, I think there are 5 broad themes, though I may be mistaken). Having said that - and with the caveat that I'm not sure how this stacks up against the number of candidates being considered for Cambridge Trust funding in any given year - I know that there were exactly 58 nominations for ESRC funding this year (across 22 departments), of which 33 will be awarded full scholarships. I wouldn't say that nomination for ESRC necessarily makes you any more likely to receive alternative funding, but I do think it should be taken as an indication that you were within roughly the top 2 applicants in your given field, which can in turn provide some indication of your chances. rnrn

  • Rejected PhD, but admitted to MAPSS program (1/3 tuition funded), cannot afford anyway. I don't know whether I can argue more funding:(

  • Was offered admission to their (unfunded) master's program instead. UofC was the lowest ranked program to which I applied, and one of the few rejections I received, so I'll be passing on that offer.

  • The notification read that I was rejected from the PhD program but accepted into the MA in Applied Quantitative Research, although there is no funding. Will most likely reject the offer to attend Berkeley or Northwestern, but it's nice to know that I was not completely rejected - nice consolation prize.

  • I called the admissions office an hour ago to ask when decisions would be released, and they said the first round of offers had been sent out. They implied I wouldn't hear anything for weeks and would likely be waitlisted or rejected. But about an hour later I got an email telling me to check the application portal, which contained a rejection.
