  • To the person I was conversing with: Gotcha. And yes, now that's flat-out wrong. Having a good fit doesn't guarantee admission, especially at a school that's as selective as Princeton. There are literally more than a hundred students who think they're a good fit for the program and a professor, and hence apply. Getting into these schools is never "really easy," no matter what your expertise is. That person totally underestimated how hard it is to get into a Ph.D. program and gave you advice that's out of touch with reality. I wish you luck in getting into other schools, though.

  • Let me specify what that guy said is "it is really easy to get admitted if you are working on film." I did not want to apply to Princeton before. I just feel sad about my admission fee. As for the letter, *I know*. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

  • I want to hit the guy who told me Princeton's department is in demand of students who are interested in film. Following the guy below "The number of admission offers available at Princeton for entering graduate students is extremely limited, and we cannot offer admission to all applicants who are well qualified. Indeed, many departments consistently have applicants who would be admitted without hesitation if additional resources were available. Our decisions take into account not only the applicants' merits but also the suitability of the programs to the candidates' expressed interests. Our goal is to achieve a sound match between the strengths of our programs and the interests of the relatively small number of outstanding students that can be accommodated."

  • Congrats to those admitted; unfortunately I’m not one of them. Boilerplate rejection, as follows: Thank you for applying to Princeton University's Graduate School for the 2019-20 academic year. While I assure you that the materials you submitted were carefully reviewed by the faculty in the Department of East Asian Studies, I regret to inform you that the department did not recommend your admission for the coming academic year.
