  • I agree with the poster below that all of us who haven't heard anything are on the waitlist. It's not clear to me what exactly it means for those of us who have not yet heard anything. Just keep putting out positive vibes, and the universe will send them back. Cool Runnings to all of you guys.
Northwestern UniversityEconomics, PhD (F20)Wait listed via Other on 11 Mar 2020 O11 Mar 2020
  • TPB: I am not sure why you are discussing that subject. Isn't it crystal clear that all of those who didn't receive anything in February are waitlisted? Northwestern does like that, a few acceptances and a long waitlist after that. That's also precisely what they told me by e-mail. In any case, those who were asked about other offers earlier today most probably have better chances (they would not lose time with unlikely acceptances...). Best luck!
Northwestern UniversityEconomics, PhD (F20)Wait listed via E-mail on 11 Mar 2020 11 Mar 2020
  • TPB: if you look at the notes of posted acceptances after March 12th last year, they were all on the waitlist. I am not sure but maybe waitlisting is a necessary condition for getting admitted in the second round?
Northwestern UniversityEconomics, PhD (F20)Other via Other on 11 Mar 2020 I11 Mar 2020
  • TPB: I don't think so because if you check last year posts, then you will see that after a lot of waitlist posts at March 12 there are new posts about acceptances. So, my theory is that if you do not take any e-mail this may be a good signal.
Northwestern UniversityEconomics, PhD (F20)Other via Other on 11 Mar 2020 O11 Mar 2020
  • TPB: I guess so because I emailed them and the reply was just "you will receive official notification by the end of this week of your status".

  • Is it implicit rejection if I still haven't heard from them?

  • The list seems to be super long this year. Not good for applicants but might be good for school.

  • "I am writing to provide you with an update on the status of your application. The PhD admission committee is very impressed with your application. However, at this time your application is still “pending,” indicating that we have not yet reached a final decision. We understand that this uncertainty is far from ideal, and we apologize for the delay. We hope to be able give you an update soon, but, realistically, it is possible that the uncertainty will be resolved only in the last week before the decision deadline of April 15. If you are still interested in our program (we hope so!), we ask you to please complete the brief questionnaire at the following link. We appreciate you submitting the form at your earliest convenience with your current information and can return to the questionnaire as many times as you need, e.g. to update your list of competing offers"

  • I emailed the department asking about my situation and got this: “Thank you for your email and continued interest in the program. At Northwestern, not all admission offers have been made; you are on the waitlist for our program and will receive more formal communication in the future. Please kindly note that the committee will be making decisions through the April 15 deadline and very likely, will not know a determination on your final status until the last week leading up to that date.”
Northwestern UniversityEconomics, PhD (F20)Other via Other on 10 Mar 2020 O9 Mar 2020
  • TPB: It seems there is a crowded list of people who have not received either acceptances or rejections. Last time I checked they implied there would be a second wave of acceptances and a waitlist. But I am not sure about a second round of rejections as last week's. Yes, very weird.
