  • 2a/8r/1p I am honestly quite angry at UCLA, not because of the rejection, but because of the utter disrespect shown during the admissions process. UCLA had the first deadline of all of the schools I applied to and did not communicate anything at all until today. I understand that the coronavirus pandemic slowed things down, but no communications at all in four and a half months is completely ridiculous. Only UNC-Chapel Hill has been worse (I still haven't heard anything from them). Even if UCLA had accepted me instead, I would not attend after this rude display. I will be attending a school that demonstrated respect for its applicants.

  • In normal times you have to think that the selection committee is looking for several things. Applicants have to have measurables past some internal hurdle. Once past that, the process is very unpredictable. They are looking to build a class, a cohort of people that will work together and have parallel but complementary traits. And on top of that they are looking for people who they think will actually accept. And the market on both sides suffers from a lack of information on what people are looking for. I've seen people on these boards with great self reported scores be rejected from multiple places. Others with below average scores celebrated multiple acceptances. This was all BEFORE the unprecedented world-wide pandemic which created uncertainty at all institutions. Try again, try better.
Texas A & M University (TAMU)Economics, PhD (F20)Other via POST on 20 Apr 2020 I20 Apr 2020
  • TPB: Hey, you're not bad. We can't know what each university is looking for each year and the whole admission process has a bit of randomness to it. I know a lot of brilliant people who got rejected before (both Ph.D. and job applications), and it had nothing to do with their potential. Keep your head up and keep on trying. This rejection does not define you.
