  • I'm sorry to inform you that you will not be offered admission to the M.S. program in Mechanical Engineering at Cornell University for Fall 2019. Our very large applicant pool and small program size enabled us to admit only 10% of our applicants--we realize that we could not accommodate many highly qualified applicants.

  • Visit day was yesterday. About 30 prospective students attended. I would say a third have better offers (though some are hesitating because of the atmosphere in other programs – Chicago – and funding – UCSD), and a couple more have equivalent offers. Optimistically, the 15 best placed people on the waitlist can expect an offer, assuming some of these will leave the waitlist.

  • TPB: Is the 160 people waitlist for a single track or across all different fields? Also the class size 15-20, is this just Econ PhD or all different fields? Thx

  • I called up Cornell: They said that there are 160+ students on the waiting list and the waiting list is separate by different fields i.e. Applied, Development etc. They reported admitting 60 students out of 550+ applications for a target class size of 15-20.

  • TBP: What I meant is that all offers are sent. They will only make offers to people on the waiting list if admited people decline their offer. But I recall seeing a lot of people who, like me, have not heard from them for a long time (admission, rejection or waitlist). This leads me to believe that the waitinglist is pretty long. There's still so hope, just not too much...
