  • 1st rejection hurts--and so does posting. Might get rejected at all 6 schools I applied to tbh. Applied to the MCS - Nonthesis. Info sci at a nearby school with a great tech rep. Had 2 SWE internships, an AI patent, 9 MOOCs, good LORs, and good SOP explaining how I found my passion for CS after switching from a business track and my struggles of being first gen linked with my desire to go into CS. sigh* really was hoping my achievements would outweigh my GPA.

  • To the poster directly below me: why would you post that? "Still got rejected(no notification yet, suppose rejected)." Historically, results have gone out in March/April (with most in April). You're making assumptions, and more importantly, muddying the data on gradcafe. Knock it off.

  • Unofficial email from POI. Area is NLP. No interview beforehand. 2 papers in review, first author. Master's with a 4.0, with my thesis advisor and reference very well-regarded in the field. Incredibly excited, especially since I had assumed everything was said and done at this point. Anecdotal evidence but: having some contact in advance of the application has led to 3/3 of my acceptances (with UMD I just shot out a personalized email to and received a "looking forward to your application"; with the second I had a long hour-long informal interview over the phone about research interests; with the last I'd worked on the two pubs with the POI). Just some advice I did not receive myself!
