  • TTPB: yeah, no interview yet. that's really confusing, as most of the admitted students had given interviews in Jan/Feb. So if we had no interview then they should have rejected us during the second batch of rejections, but they didn't. So don't know what they are thinking?? Making us wait for more than 6 months just for rejection is frustrating.

  • Email to check portal Friday afternoon. Comparative Literature Major Gpa 3.63, Spanish Minor 3.67 Overall 3.46 (I didnt care for my GEs, I had a few semesters with 3.9s and it evened out. I think they really liked the change and improvement through the years. No GRE submitted, but I scored in the 10% so I got lucky with not submitting bcs I bombed it LMAO (my defense was I had the stomach virus during the test) National Fellowship, 3 languages, National research experience. Very strong personal essays, recommendations and video essays. They take a holistic approach to admission so do not be afraid if you are weak in an area! I also filled out all the optional essays which helped alot. No word on aid yet. To everyone applying do not be afraid, talk about your research and life experiences! Good luck and stay safe!

  • Got waitlisted here Last Friday (17th). Can anyone tell me more about the tech scene especially the AI scene in Canada? I have decent admits from the USA: Amherst, UCSD, etc. What would be better if I get into UBC (already have admit from Waterloo DS) ?

Columbia UniversityOperations Management, PhD (F20)Other via POST on 18 Apr 2020 18 Apr 2020
  • TTPB: Very rightly said. It is a business. They are standing well to the name of their programs, operation management. Very well managing the applicants. clear way is by extending the application deadline. Cheeky isn't it. Big recession is coming after this hit virus gets over. It will last for next 2-3 years. If I am not wrong USA already has lot of people registered for unemployment. IDK what will happen. For Columbia I am sure they would have slashed Ph.D funding drastically to cope up w post wuhan virus sh**.

Columbia UniversityOperations Management, Masters (F20)Other via Other on 17 Apr 2020 17 Apr 2020
  • "Application deadline extended to June" . Okay, So, the puzzle pieces are coming together. They're playing games. No respect for early applicants. Plus, you know the theory that more people go to grad. school during a recession. So, they're possibly trying to get those coins from that segment, as well. They were already tight with the financial aid. I anticipate less, now. Overall, I'm disappointed in the way they're handling everything. TPB rightly stated that this is a business. We paid application fees, and deserve timely processing and professional correspondence. Communication is so pivotal.
Columbia UniversityOperations Research, PhD (F20)Other via Other on 18 Apr 2020 17 Apr 2020
  • TTPB: #2 may be valid. #1 is not. If they provide a waitlist notification and a cutoff date for final decision, this can still easily be automated and applicants can still be communicated with via templates - no increased burden on them. The justification of providing a waitlist notification to applicants is in maintaining their respect. Higher education is a business. Students are the customers. This is poor customer service. Can this one instance harm the reputation of a powerhouse like Columbia? No. But an accu*ulation of such practices and emergence of a pattern over a prolonged timeline will. That qualifies for justification.
