Got a rejection email without any interview schedules. I chose 3 POIs but didn't contact them before the application process! Emailed them last week just to mention I am choosing them and they are my priority choices but none of them replied back!

I focus on AI. My research interests match well with my poi. So I was strongly recommended to the committee after the informal meeting. No committee interview is required for PhD admission at UW-Madison. The admission rate is approximately 6%.

Generic rejection email + "It has been determined that your application may be better suited for consideration to the Master's degree program", which I understand most of the time is not funded and is super expensive. Go$dam$

Several independent projects and research experience, two publications. They said I was a better fit for the Masters program.
