Got an email that a decision had been made. This was on the portal. I am writing in regard to your application for admission to graduate study at the University of Southern California. After careful review of your application and supporting materials, the Admission Committee has asked me to inform you that your application to the Doctor of Philosophy program in Economics for Fall 2021 has not been approved, and we are not able to offer you admission to this program. We understand this must be very disappointing news. Please bear in mind that each year the university receives applications from many more students than it can accommodate. Admissibility is determined by the size of the applicant pool as well as student credentials. Unfortunately, as a result we are not able to offer admission to some students of significant ability and potential. We encourage you to continue to work toward your educational and professional goals, and wish you every success in your future endeavors.

TPB: My status also became Under Grad School Review. Contacted the coordinator this week, said would see updates in a few days. I guess it is not a good signal, Rej on the way bro.

Like TPB a generic Waitlist message, the weirdest I have seen so far. What do they mean by "normally, the fraction of acceptances is somewhere around 50%"? They will end up offering to 125 candidates by the end of this cycle? Or are they refering to the batch of 15 people out of which about 7 have accepted the offer?

TPB: I think the real admissions start now. But it will also be tough for them as many strong applicants (from 235) have other offers. I think that 15 people are creme de la creme of the applications, so they wanted to see if they can have a chance with those 15 students. CEMFI has the same system, told me that my application is still under review. So I don't think it's a proper waitlist (for SU).

TPB: Got the same email. I really don't get it, does this mean that they have waitlisted all other 235 applicants instead of rejecting some? If that's the case, why are they asking all 235 of us if we're interested in their program or have other offers? Surely there must be a significant portion of the 235 applicants who they wouldn't accept under any circumstances..such a weird approach
