Was told by PI that she would accept me as her student if my profile was passed through the initial review. Informal notification through same professor that I did not get accepted (she was never sent my profile).

Decent research experience, no papers, 3 good LoRs. Honestly, after seeing accepted ones' profiles, I was expecting to be rejected.

TTPB: 3.79/4.00 seems to be a decent GPA. Which university in China are you from?

Undergrad from China. Mid GPA, decent GRE&TOEFL, 1 ongoing research project, no paper. Guess I got waitlisted only cuz of my SOP, or it is only a courtesy waitlist...

TTPB - I am an MSR student (Fall 2020) and I can assure you that more than 1/3 of our cohort deferred their acceptance till Fall. They usually accept 90 people and more than 35 deferred till next year. So your spots were 90-35=55 to get into MSR. I'm sorry that's the case, it sucks to be in that position and you would've probably gotten in during normal times. Best of luck in your other applications and if not apply next year!
