"Confusion about April 15th
I'm seeing a lot of posts about universities "waiting until the last minute" and "not abiding by the deadline"
April 15th has NOTHING to do with when universities release results. It is the deadline for accepted students to accept funded offers. And even then, not all universities are a signatory of that decision.
Universities can and will continue to release results til July even. They are not obligated to abide by any national deadline. I'm not saying that it's not frustrating that they're taking their sweet time, just telling you that this is how things go and to not let your expectations run wild today/tomorrow.
For waitlisted applicants and applicants put on a "silent waitlist," you'll start hearing from universities after April 15th as people commit to offers.
If you're an international student: FINALIZE YOUR UNIS. Stop waiting. Even if you got in, visa processing will take MONTHS. Many are facing issues with finding good visa slots, and it might delay your start date or lose you your offer altogether.
For domestic students: you can wait longer. However, remember that there are also things to finalize, like housing. It's less of a risk, but I still recommend committing to a school no later than 2 months before your start date.
Good luck, everyone"

Philosophy, Virginia Tech MAKE YOUR DECISION NOW!! From Virginia Tech's Grad Coordinator: "The Virginia Tech waitlist works as follows. Unlike most departments, we don't 'over admit'--this means that if we have five funded spots available, we only have five offers out at a time. The waitlist process can go on up to April 15th--at that point, we have to finalize our class (as does every other graduate program--this is the agreed upon date for wrapping up funded admissions offers)." They will not send any offers out after Saturday so if you don't make a decision you are SERIOUSLY screwing over the people on the waitlist. Please just make your decision, DO NOT WAIT!!!

Philosophy, Harvard University Recieved a fax from Harvard, they told me my application was incorrectly flagged as a rejection. This is the happiest that I’ve ever been this week. When I saw the Harvard Letterhead, I began to weep—the stogie that I had previously lit and left unattended had filled the room with a rolling smoke, causing the aforementioned tears. I could barely see through the smoke to make out the typeface that Harvard uses. EB Garamond—typical. Most people don’t take the time to notice these kinds of things, but when you get as many acceptances as I do, you begin to appreciate the small stuff. I don’t plan on accepting anytime soon—I have a meaty handful of acceptances, and I’ve got my pudgie little fingers in a handful of waitlists. I plan on using them all as leverage so I can get Harvard to reimburse me for the cost of moving my man-servant to Cambridge.
Has anyone heard from Rice?

Philosophy, University Of Notre Dame To previous post I’m glad you reapplied and got good news. That does not excuse people sitting on multiple offers only to decline making it so late schools are not able to make offers to those on waitlists. So please decline peeps. You can at least narrow down to 1/2 + your waitlist. :)))

Philosophy, University Of Notre Dame Let's all calm down. No one is sitting on offers because they're greedy. More than likely, the applicants holding out are on waitlists themselves, so they can't safely decline their current offers. Also, for the record, it's false that no new pertinent information comes out this late in the cycle. I recieved a fellowship offer today that broke a four-way tie between schools that had accepted or waitlisted me, and I'll be withdrawing from three of them this afternoon. Moreover, choosing between schools is an intrinsically difficult and enormously consequential decision. Applicants have every right to take their time. (And, by the way, they have every right to negotiate for more funding. Doing a PhD is no walk in the park, financially speaking.) I understand how difficult it is to be without an offer: I recieved nothing but rejections when I applied back in 2021, and I was devastated. But I am happy to report that life goes on, and there will be more opportunities to apply. Be happy for the applicants with multiple offers. They probably all but killed themselves for the last four to six years to pull that off. Don't resent them for it. Take a deep breath, drink a glass of water, take a nap if you can, and find something meaningful to occupy you until next Saturday.
