Graduate Assistantship will be $24,312 for the ten-month academic year, plus tuition remission and complete medical coverage for yourself and your dependents. Also support during the summer is often available for teaching summer courses or in one of our research groups with stipends of $1700-$4000.

I regret to inform you that your application to the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Stony Brook University has been declined. This year we saw a sizable increase in the number of applicants, while the number of TA-lines remained strictly limited.Based on a careful review of your application, and in view of the projected class size limited to about thirty students, the Admissions Committee had to make difficult choices, refusing admission to many students who are well-qualified for graduate school

Blah blah blah, a large number of good candidates, I must part my hair to the wrong side or something. I figure for every 100 candidates 60 aren't deemed fit, 5 are clearly great, and it's just a random selection for the other 35.
