Email from department with all my POI cc-ed, admit letter with details on funding included

Got an email to check the online portal.

I received a phone call yesterday from a admissions committee member informing me of my acceptance and inviting me to an on-campus visit event in March. They mentioned that the official admission letter would be sent out shortly. Fingers crossed.

Expected. GPA is MS, one math research (no pub), one stat research (revision), but low undergrad GPA

Received an email from POI to have a brief discussion. Didn't expect NYU to do interviews, so this is completely surprising!

Rejected because LOR was submitted late :/

No GRE

Notified through portal.

This is my second year in a row. Condensed Matter their. Perfect GPA, two publications and one masters thesis. Already two rejections so far. What do I do?! What do admissions committees look for?
