hep-th: received email from private @stanford.edu address stating rejection. Already accepted offer at top chocice (couldnt withdraw application)

Hep-th, was really hoping for this one :'(

Plenty of research, excellent rec letters and all that good stuff. Guess I'm not getting my phd in physics this year since it's 0/8. Oh well, I was already depressed, this is prolly the breaking point.

To the accepted people below: Congrats! Did you have interviews, and what are your subfields?

As somebody who applied a second time, my advice is that don't stress about the ranking of your university. Rather you should focus on finding a good topic to work on with a supportive faculty. Down the line your good work will open up doors to many more opportunities.
