Masters in marine science. 3.9 grad GPA. Multiple years of research experience at FFRDCs. Very disappointing. Posting this info so others can commiserate

3.96 grad GPA. Master's in Marine Biology. Little over two years of full-time research. Really disappointed by the results, thought I put a strong application together... "As you know, our program is very small so you should not be too discouraged by this news."

From an Italian university, not particularly high ranked as far as I know. Average Italian grade of 29.8/30

UG at Tier 1 College from India.

State institution 1 paper as first author 1 REU 4 conference presentations/posters

Scholarship package will be discussed in Late March/ Early April

No GRE, 1y research experience, very strong recommendations, coming from Econ & CS background from the best Italian business school.

Received an email from the program director!

Rejected to Applied Mathematics PhD, accepted to unfunded masters program.

Waiting for other offers.

3 years of experimental CMX physics research at a top uni, publications in review, abundant presentation & teaching experience, honor degree, solid awards & fellowships, and great letters from well-known PIs. Idk what went wrong... just really, really disappointed and depressed rn.
