University of Washington Computational Linguistics Graduate School Admission Results

Majored in Linguistics and minored in Computer Science, with trainings of Algorithms and Data Structures. Having one research paper but not in the field. Taken an undergraduate level computational linguistics course. Knows Japanese, Spanish, Mandarin, and English. Able to code in Swift, C++, and several other programming languages. Worked as a indie app developer. Can't actually figure out why I am rejected. :(

Background: BS & MS(by research) in CS, with a graduate thesis on machine learning. 1 research paper(2nd author) in a top-tier big data conference. 1+ years of NLP experience at a US healthcare firm. Studied German for 2 semesters (undergrad). Knows Sanskrit(intermediate), Hindi(advanced), and Telugu. Really can't figure out why I wasn't accepted.

Undergrad degree in linguistics from UCLA (3.96 GPA, department honors). One research paper, unpublished. Lots of post-grad classes in math and comp sci. I think the strongest part of my application was my essay, because I made sure to show a) that I was a good fit/invested in UW specifically, and b) what I wanted to do with the degree, in relation to my professional background.

Background: BS in Linguistics & French from University of Wisconsin, 4 semesters of Russian, some Ukrainian, some entry level comp sci courses- I spent the last year taking several courses online to strengthen my math/comp sci, completed training + practicum in Language and Literacy therapy for children w/ dyslexia, interested in working with alternative/augmentative communication devices (previous experience working w/non verbal individuals w/ autism). I believe my background working with children with disabilities and interest in assistive technology was big in my favor.

Not surprised. BA in Linguistics and Chinese, lived abroad for 6 years working, but weak comp sci background. Was encouraged to apply for their certificate program, but will just accept one of the other offers I have.

I was just accepted off the waitlist! But I have very little time to decide before losing the funding. Decisions, decisions...

Rejected from PhD program, accepted to unfunded MS in applied and computational math. Research experience in both math and biology departments, math major cs minor.

Received acceptance at the end of the interview. Honed SOP and 3 strong letters of recommendation from faculty very close to me.

computer engineering degree, 2 years of work experience as a software engineer, no research experience

Applied to MS in Applied Math and got into MS Applied & Computational. Not sure about the main differences atm.
