:( I thought it at least wouldn't be as competitive as places like Harvard or Stanford or whatnot, I'm not really sure why I thought that though. Maybe the location/name factor? I just assumed big name places would be way more competitive but maybe UIUC is the same then

TTPB: Its like #1 school in the world for CMT, what are you talking about? Of course it is competitive.

TTPB: Is it competitive for CMT? It is *the* school for CMT, probably the strongest department in the US in this field. :) I didn't make it, but maybe you will. Good luck.

Email was sent on March 6th. I has been a hard year for International students. AMO

TTPB: After taking $90 for application and around $45 for TOEFL, GRE - ignoring students sounds extremely disrespectful. I hope they don't do that and at least let us know about rejections.

To the people (like me) who have not gotten anything back yet, don't get your hopes up. From last year it looked like the welcome weekend at the end of March came and went without them notifying people of their rejections, so that will probably happen too. We just fell through the cracks.

If I haven't been notified does that mean I'm waitlisted?

My bad, I was under the assumption 30 is normal intake. And a prof told me that they will admit less people this year as the incoming class size last year was large. Still, I think 2-3% is too low for international astro theory guys like me to make it in.

TTPB: The usual class size is 60-80, but this year due to funding issues they are only able to take ~30 (from a professor at UIUC). I believe less than 100 offers were made, probably 30 theory and 60 experiment.

Historically they admit around 200. This year may be different.

"Had close to 1000 applicants." So that's about 1% acceptance rate again.:/

TTPB: I still can't understand why they give us false hope. What is the purpose? "Recommended to be accepted" is indeed a wired situation.

TTPB: Would you mind sharing where you find this information that there are more than a hundred students who were recommended to be accepted, and there are under 10 opened remaining position? I got the same email saying that "you are recommended to be accepted. But before you can be admitted, you must find an advisor....."

Undergrad from top private university in India. Interview with POI in November (before applying).

I hate this school. They said I'm admitted to the department, but I have to find my advisor. The problem is, there are quite slim opened remaining position (may be under 10), and there are more than a hundred students like me. Why do they recommend me to the department even though there are few positions? False Hope
