Undergrad degree in linguistics from UCLA (3.96 GPA, department honors). One research paper, unpublished. Lots of post-grad classes in math and comp sci. I think the strongest part of my application was my essay, because I made sure to show a) that I was a good fit/invested in UW specifically, and b) what I wanted to do with the degree, in relation to my professional background.

Background: BS & MS(by research) in CS, with a graduate thesis on machine learning. 1 research paper(2nd author) in a top-tier big data conference. 1+ years of NLP experience at a US healthcare firm. Studied German for 2 semesters (undergrad). Knows Sanskrit(intermediate), Hindi(advanced), and Telugu. Really can't figure out why I wasn't accepted.

Majored in Linguistics and minored in Computer Science, with trainings of Algorithms and Data Structures. Having one research paper but not in the field. Taken an undergraduate level computational linguistics course. Knows Japanese, Spanish, Mandarin, and English. Able to code in Swift, C++, and several other programming languages. Worked as a indie app developer. Can't actually figure out why I am rejected. :(

I previously posted that I am on the waitlist. Today they invited me to interview--apparently other waitlisted students will be interviewed as well, but taking it as a good sign!

Background: Scottish 4 year MA degree in Cognitive Science (1st class), with a focus on linguistics (syntax/semantics) and computer science (ML/NLP). No research paper. Work sample: coursework project on RNN language model with theoretical analysis. Have an ongoing degree project in CL.

Current student in the MSE program at UW--for those applying, finding a faculty member to fund your studies in the PhD program plays a HUGE role in being admitted here

Does anyone know what's going on with admissions? I still haven't heard ANYTHING.

DNP, waitlist #1

I was just awarded a small departmental scholarship, but am really hoping to find another funding opportunity! Other schools have offered me more money, but UW is my top choice.

I have e-mailed them three times to check on the status of applications. They informed me that they are still reviewing applications and should be making final decisions by the first week of April. This is really interesting, though, since on my other graduate visits, students informed me that they have or will be attending their visitation weekend. I just do not appreciate such a long wait. I already accepted another offer, though, but hopefully this information is useful to others who are still patiently waiting.
