To the person asking about NMSU’s waitlist: I am also a second alternate. I called to ask more about what that means. They accepted six people and waitlisted six people. There are three people who are considered in the group of first alternates and three people who are considered second alternates. So, when someone rejects their offer, the school will look at the first alternate who is most like the applicant that rejected, regarding post masters/post bach and research interests. In this way, they ensure balance in the cohort. If someone from the first alternate pool is offered a spot, they will move someone who is a second alternate up to the first alternate waiting list. If this were to happen, they would notify you of that change. I hope that helps!

To the NMSU poster below, do you mind saying what professor you applied under? On this forum a while back, I noticed there were a few people who were notified that they were a “second alternate” on the waitlist, so I assume they were all listed as second alternates for different professors.

I accepted my offer to UT Austin today! I'm so excited to join such a wonderful group of scholars.

To the NMSU poster below: I have been offered a spot but have not accepted the offer yet. It is my second choice school, and I am on a waitlist at my first. If I do not hear from the first I will be accepting. Are you coming post-bach or post masters? NMSU's waitlist process takes that into consideration based on who rejected.

Notified by email to check website. There was an attached letter marked "Notification of Refusal" when opened. Stated "Your application is not sufficiently strong to be awarded an admission space."

Called CNPS program assistant and was informed I was on the waitlist and will hear in April
