- To the person asking about NMSU’s waitlist: I am also a second alternate. I called to ask more about what that means. They accepted six people and waitlisted six people. There are three people who are considered in the group of first alternates and three people who are considered second alternates. So, when someone rejects their offer, the school will look at the first alternate who is most like the applicant that rejected, regarding post masters/post bach and research interests. In this way, they ensure balance in the cohort. If someone from the first alternate pool is offered a spot, they will move someone who is a second alternate up to the first alternate waiting list. If this were to happen, they would notify you of that change. I hope that helps!
