getting an offer to the MLT instead of the PhD is like getting offered a negative 44k stipend

Applied through both McGill and MILA. Notified by PoI with whom I had spoken prior to application. NLP track. Hold a master's from UK, graduated with distinction. First author on two submitted top conference papers. Extremely excited.

Phone call from interviewer saying I'm accepted. Formal email to arrive today by 5 pm

To the post below asking about ML/NLP, I had an interview with Stanford NLP in late Jan but haven't heard from them since.

May quit research forever.

Applied for the PhD, but was accepted to the master's (without funding, but with assurance that "many Masters’ students find partial or full support directly from research projects beginning in their first or second semester"). Supposedly, continuing to the PhD is possible contingent on good master's performance and aligned stars. Already have a master's with a 4.0 and two NAACL papers (first author) in review. Two strong, high-quality LoRs and one that's presumably a "did well in class." Will very likely not attend.

Received a phone call from POI. Track: system and networking.

40% Merit Scholarship.

6 publications, one first author, another first author paper in review. 3.95 GPA from in Master's program at top 20 university, 4.0 GPA from undergrad. Applied to NLP group.

I think McGill outright rejects people based on GRE quant in round one. Had 4 papers - 2 NIPS workshop, 1 AAAI workshop and one in AI stats. :(
