I know two of my friends who got into the same program and now I understand the meaning of "intense competition". I got into all 5 other schools that I applied to including University of Washington, so not too worried about it :P They took ridiculously long to reply.

Essay wrote on fringe focus of computer science. May have had better luck gearing the essay towards traditional comp sci (algorithms, arch, nlp, etc). 3.9 GPA masters, 4 years industry xp, first year phd student, top 10 school.

If you haven't received either a rejection or an acceptance by now, it means you're wait-listed.

3rd rejection, 1 acceptance, 1 waiting. Advise to future applicants (to any university, not just Duke): In my case, I was only accepted where faculty members knew my advisor. Apply to those places where your advisor can present a good case in your behalf. Having good scores means you are going to be reviewed, and experience is really useful (I have 2 years of research exp, 3 publications, and a few more on the go), but I'm convinced that the thing gives you the edge are your LORs. If the faculty know them, and trust their judgment, you are good to go. Good luck everyone!
