Recevied an email from the department head stating I was not accepted. Kinda bummed because this is my dream school. I have known professors from this department personally, and was told I had a solid application. They did also tell me that they had a record-breaking number of applications this year.

No interview, just email. Good Morning, Thank you for submitting your application materials to the Department of Applied Linguistics for the Ph.D. degree in Applied Linguistics. The Admissions Committee has now completed its review of the applications for Fall 2026. I regret to inform you that you have not been admitted into the program. When making admissions decisions we consider the applicant's academic record, type and range of teaching and professional experiences, and specified research interests. In addition to selecting only those applicants with top ratings in all of these categories, we look for those whose research interests closely match the scholarly expertise of the APLNG faculty. Thus, each year we reject applicants with strong applications but with research interests that are not the best fit with our faculty. This year, the decisions were particularly difficult as we had a large number of highly qualified applicants. I regret that our decision could not be more positive. On behalf of the Admissions Committee, I wish you continued success in your academic and professional endeavors.

Genuinely have no idea what went wrong. Had excellent connections in this department, had spoken multiple times with a potential advisor, gotten advice from the head of graduate studies on what I needed to add to my application. Rejection email said that there were people who weren't a fit with potential advisors, but I know that cannot have been me as my potential advisor was very excited to work with me. Was my dream school so I am incredibly shocked and disappointed. 1a/4r

Received a kind email from the director of graduate studies who indicated that I am at the top of their waitlist. I hope to eventually be admitted to this program (and its dual-title in African Studies), as it aligns well and can help shape me into the teacher, instructor, and advisor I want to be in the future.
