Grad School GPA. I emailed over the weekend and I was told they only accepted 3 people and I was not one. I got the official notification today.

Low cumulative GPA, but did well in my last two years. Received my acceptance on the portal before I got the email.

MMath CS (thesis-based). Checked the portal and found that I've been rejected

Applied without contacting any professors.

Was put on the waitlist originally. 5 years of guaranteed funding. Was interviewed to be put on the waitlist. Surprised I got in.

2.5+ years of Computer Science teaching experience in a university, 1 local conference publication

Top IIT - (Dual Degree: Mech B.Tech + Robotics M.Tech); 3 Strong LORs( 1 CS Prof India, 1 CS Prof Georgia Tech, 1 Bio Prof US). Two Research Internships (Georgia Tech in RL + NTU in DL). Few Relevant projects and no Publications.

It was a generic application without any prior approval from any of the faculty members. For PhD in Computer Engineering, don't apply to this university unless you get the green signal from the professor/POI. Today I got the rejection letter as below: Dear X, Thank you for your application to the School of Engineering and Applied Science. We have thoroughly reviewed your application and the supporting documents submitted on your behalf, and considered the evaluation made by the Admission Committee of the PhD program in Computer Engineering. I am sorry to inform you that based on this joint consideration we are unable to approve your admission at this time. Every year we receive a large number of excellent applications for our incoming class of graduate students and are able to offer admission to only a small fraction. A number of factors are considered in making admission decisions including essays, letters of recommendation, academic standing of the programs in which you have studied, educational preparation for your field, relevant research activities, test scores, grades, recommendation of faculty in the area to which you applied, and the match between your research interests and those of individual faculty and research groups here at the University of Virginia. Unfortunately, your application was not among those who were judged to be the best match with our programs. Should you have questions concerning your application, I suggest that you contact the Graduate Program Director of the Computer Engineering program. They literally forgot about me in this program, I had to email them (did not respond) and call (finally answered) to find out results. They mixed me up with another student, had to clear out who I am to begin with. After interview professor never got back to me. I finally decided to reach out to them. They did not explain why. Then the usual "we hope you consider applying again". This is nonsense. If you are rejected once, do not even bother second time- they will not accept you, this has been tried over and over again. After the roller coaster they put me through I am not reapplying there. To wait for several months- they could have been nicer and just plain rejected sooner so I could get on with the rest of this year.

Has anyone from waitlist heard from the department? Since it's about the Apr 8 deadline and I still didn't received any message after the waitlist, I suppose either there is no spot for waitlist, or they have already finished accepting waitlists…
