My PI encouraged me to apply

I attended department visit and was given my acceptance letter by my prospective advisor at the end of the visiting day schedule. Guaranteed funding through TA-ship. My GPA and GRE scores have been listed. I have excellent research internship experience in the form of two summer internships through NASA NIFS (Summer 2016, 2017) and one NASA DEVELOP internship (during gap year Fall 2018). Additionally, I have one peer-reviewed paper in review (second author).

I was not officially rejected or waitlisted, I'm just in purgatory. I had to email the professor who I had put as my preferred advisor to get any response. The response said that they had to turn down even "very qualified students" (is this a jab or a compliment?), and they are leaving my application open in case any spots open up. I have other funded offers, so even if they're keeping my application in purgatory, I'll be asking for it to be closed.

Department received much less funding this year than they had initially thought they would. I would have been the next person to receive funding if available.

Received personalized email from graduate program director including stipend details. This is a fantastic department.

Invited to campus, no mention of interview but I assume there will be one.
