A long-shot, but with a $130 application fee, I would have hoped for more than a generic email. Makes me lose a little respect for the trees.

I received an email telling me to check the website. I am writing with considerable regret to let you know that we are not able to offer you admission to the PhD program in Linguistics at Stanford. Admissions decisions are always difficult to make, and we have had an unusually large number of highly qualified applicants. Since the University has allocated us funding for about seven students, we have been in the difficult position of not being able to offer positions to many highly qualified applicants. All of us in the department sincerely hope that you will be able to pursue your studies at another university and thank you for the opportunity to consider your application. We wish you every success for the future.
