One publication in high impact journal, several years research, posters at national meeting, several undergraduate awards. They seemed to really like my background. I'm a little older as I took a few years off after high school. They also liked my upbringing as I'm hispanic and grew up around a lot of underprivileged people, etc. Also, they all mentioned the fact that my past research experience was strongly reflected in my proposal as they believed I could actually accomplish my proposal.
