Because your interest in the University is deeply appreciated, this decision is not easy to convey. Though your plans cannot be accommodated at Northwestern University, the faculty and administrators of The Graduate School respect your intellectual ambition and wish you success in attaining your goal of advanced study.

I interviewed / chatted with around 5 professors, thought it was going well.

IELTS - 8.0, 1 Research paper, 1 Patent published and 1 Research in process Got admitted into the Portland campus

One round of interview (with PI). Then waited for a month. Emailed by PI of the rejection.

Informal email from faculty expressing their interest in accepting me and checking if I already recieved dominating offers. 5a/3w/1i/1r/8p

there's a possibility I submitted my SoP with a fatal error...

This was my top choice. I had a very strong profile with many years of research experience and research projects. I don't know what I could have done better to get to at-least to the interview round. Just an Assumptions: There might be many factors such as being international student (Masters from US) - funding might be an issue, no connection made with the faculty before or during the application period. I received an email to check the decision letter at the portal.
