Letter read: "The field of Medieval Studies has carefully considered your application for admission. I am sorry to tell you that we are not able to offer you admission. Our decision does not indicate that your application was not worthy, but our program can fill only a very small number of slots, whose selection is determined often by very subtle distinctions of relative merit and fit with our faculty. In so doing we are forced to reject many worthy applicants. We wish you every success."
