I got an e-mail from Georgetown University Office of Graduate Admissions about 'application status update' just now (at 11:33 am, Washington D.C.). The updated application status page said "Upon the recommendation of the Admissions Committee, I am pleased to approve your admission to the Ph.D. in Economics program, effective with the Fall 2020 Semester. Be sure to print or save a copy of this letter for your future reference. I am also pleased to inform you that you have been selected to receive a merit-based Graduate School financial aid award. More information about your award and how to accept it is detailed in the financial award letter that will follow."

Straight from undergrad. Multiple work/study experiences in the ME, decent GPA, no GRE

3.91 undergrad gpa from small, average (possibly below-average) liberal arts school. IR/French double major, Spanish/econ double minor. 95th percentile verbal, 84th writing, average quant. No internships but strong recs, 1.5 years full time employment in unrelated field + consistent employment through undergrad. Would love love love to get in off the waitlist but probably lots of much better candidates also on the list. Astonished to have been put on it at all instead of outright rejection. Accepted to JHU, GW, American, Denver, UCSD

Has anyone heard from the government department? I called a while ago and heard it was last week or this week but haven't heard anything.

in response to your question below, I applied on and by the January 15th deadline. to my knowledge, this was the only deadline after which applications would be read. the Dec. 1 deadline was only meant to provide a waived application fee but I think applications were still read at the same time. hope this helps!

TPB: Oh, stop it! They probably do get a lot of appeals, so that is the reason he included that sentence. Especially with him being super sensitive and understanding, people could get things wrong and assume the university was opened to negotiation. I get why you're hurt, that's ok, but the email was sweet af. Bye! (from one rejected to another)

Unlike some posts below I found both letters unprofessional and unpleasant in tone: in the first letter (assuming everyone gets it) it tells us that grad school in econ is not for everyone...in the rejection letter the message was "DO NOT CONSIDER REQUESTS TO APPEAL OUR ADMISSIONS DECISIONS" and "so this is something you will just have to accept even if you disagree with our decision". And BTW, correct me if I am wrong--how can you reduce type 1 and 2 errors simultaneously without increasing sample size? Actually the experience made me realize this is not a place for me. Still congrats to those admitted anyway : )
