To person asking about GA Tech admission - yes, it was very early and quite surprising. I spoke with the graduate director on the phone and they said it was the first acceptance they sent out, so don't be surprised if you haven't heard anything yet. I submitted the last week of November. No contact with any professors before applying, but I did work at a national lab that the graduate director himself had actually worked at as well, so that might have caught their attention.
