This was for the master's with thesis and I did not reach out to potential supervisors ahead of time (oopsies this is where I am doing my undergrad so I didn't feel it was necessary). I received an email from the department saying they had referred me to the graduate studies office which still has to officially admit me, but that it is typically a formality!
