Interviewed but rejected. Welp.

was told to be a very short waitlist.

HEP Theory; I was interviewed last week. Was told I have been placed on a "very short waitlist of alternates."

Around ~1.5 yrs research experience in a different astro area than what I listed as my primary interest

I was informed that I was not being admitted via email earlier this week and then was able to view that decision via my application status online.

Checked portal - not notified personally. PIO indicated the advising faculty for my field was retiring and unable to take students this year

I have got no interview invitation after the department emailed me saying "You are presently high on our waitlist for admission" on January 22nd. Could I ask those who got interviewed by Michigan whether you were also waitlisted before you got the interview, or you directly received the interview invitation without getting the 'waitlisted' email?

Emailed POI and had great discourse research interests that was a good fit. POI encouraged me to apply but noted not priority to take a new student for upcoming year. Received automated mass rejection email.

I don't have an MA so I will probably never get into a PhD program, and my years in a public school classroom doesn't mean much to committees. Oh well.

Extremely late offer of admission for MS program...
