Still wait listed. Frustrated. For family and person reasons, Columbia was all I applied to, first application after different career. Any insight into the chances or should I just wait for my August rejection and reapply?

Figured I was rejected when I didn't hear anything by end of January. Only took four months for them to confirm so.

To the below: I think the chances of getting in at this point are nonexistent. When I called, it sounded like enough of the initial offers accepted that they didn't even need to go to the waitlist. Also, someone on another forum said that they called to decline their spot and were told that there was a long waitlist. At this point, the only way in would be if someone who has accepted and paid a deposit changed their mind and decided not to attend. I don't know how often this has happened in past years, but it seems pretty unlikely.

Replying to Columbia MFA commenter below. I’d be interested to know what you’ve heard about the waitlist and likelihood of admission. I was initially (mid-March) told I was on a “small & select” waitlist, then didn’t hear anything until 2 weeks ago (beginning of May) when I emailed to follow up. Got a friendly but neutral email from admissions office saying basically they’d be in touch if a spot opened up between May and August. I’d like to have some idea of how many people are on this list (I am also creative nonfiction...), and whether it’s moved much in May-August in past years.

I hear conflicting stories about an admission from the Columbia waitlist - although I imagine it is different for different programs. I only applied to Columbia because I have to remain in New York. I could have applied to Hunter, and maybe I should have but I've heard their admissions rate is lower. Any insights?

So I'm not sure if you guys are interested in CSUs, but I received a letter in the mail from CSULB. I am considered an "alternate candidate," which is basically the waitlist. I called the grad office and they gave me little hope of an acceptance. So I guess that wraps up my first season of grad school applications and the results were definitely mediocre. Moving onward now I guess?

I applied to four schools--was rejected to two, waitlisted to one, and accepted to one. About a week before the April 15th deadline, I received a call from my all-time favorite writer who told me I had moved off the waitlist to my top choice. I'm still trying to process it. I am so grateful and am humbled by all the writers who applied to these programs and undoubtedly wield powerful and original voices. I wish everyone the best of luck in their literary endeavors. For those who will not be going to a program, keep your spirits high and remember that there is no *right* way to be a writer. You are all artists, and not getting into a program is not diagnostic of anything. Keep your spirits high and don't let anything or anyone deter you from your passion and purpose.
