"Thank you for your application to the University of Washington Graduate School. We appreciate your consideration of the University of Washington (UW) Immunology PhD program for your graduate school education. The Immunology Admissions Committee met in December to discuss each application in the Immunology applicant pool and decided which 30 applicants to invite for interviews (out of a total 237 applications). We regret to inform you that after careful deliberation your application was not among the few that were selected for admission to this program. The number and quality of graduate applicants to the University of Washington are extraordinary and these difficult decisions are reached through careful consideration of all applicants to a given program. In many cases, enrollment restrictions are also a factor, limiting our ability to accept all qualified applicants. While we know that it is disappointing to receive a letter such as this, we encourage you to continue to explore graduate opportunities in other programs here at the University of Washington or elsewhere. Thank you for the time and effort you invested into applying to our graduate program, as we recognize that expenditures of money and time to do so can be considerable. On behalf of the Admissions Committee, we want to extend our best wishes to you in your future educational endeavors and hope that you continue to pursue a graduate education here or at other world-class universities. Applied for the PhD program, but was instead accepted into the Masters program due to "faculty size and other constraints". Not too bummed considering I found out after applying that the only two professors I wanted to do work with weren't accepting research students for the next two years.
