I am the initial poster (saying I got an email from a prof): their email was for the same purpose as the poster below said -- i.e., they wanted to know if I am interested in their program because they think I have a shot at a higher-ranked program. Not having received such informal email does not mean you will not be accepted -- you may well receive an offer w/o that email if they think they have a good chance of attracting you.
