Top tier Indian research institute. Degree in abstract mathematics. Decent GPA, 2 international publications in machine learning, multiple under review, strong LORs, strong SOP. Rejects from CMU, Princeton, Stanford and now UoT.

Rejections from CMU, UIUC, UBC, UTA and now UoT. Only 3 colleges left. Decided to go big or go home. Home appears likely.

Got rejected this morning. Field is theory. I am from top Canadian university, high GPA, and good ref letters but not research experience. Guess I was already on the wait list so recjection is expected.

Finally rejected. Told acceptance rate < 10% this year. Should focus on research experience. GPA is useless since everyone has a high GPA.

I think you are right on your first suggestion. It is more pragmatic for them to make immediate offers to the most attractive candidates (or some of the internal candidates moving up from their master's program). After they get a couple rejected offers from the top-tier candidates, they reallocate those offers and funding packages to different applicants. This ensures that they get quick dibs on the best candidates, but it also makes the whole admissions process take a long time. I've read articles about some universities who do not even extend offers to the most qualified candidates because they assume the candidate will select a more prestigious program. They make offers directly to the candidates who best match their normal caliber of student- good or bad. It's almost like a game theory problem lol. Anyway, it's still a pain for us.
