Received an email to check the website at 4 am this morning. I was invited to the visit day, but did not attend. Also was not in contact with any professors beforehand.

TPB: Yes, the main issue is that they are poor (financial uncertainty for students + good profs leaving). I think that many of us would be happy to take their offer if they had a strong placement or an amazing group in some subfield, but no. And they get worse and worse with the years.

2a/21d/4p (also 3.5 gpa from MS in econ), 2 year ra @top business school. FYI about the acceptance & included offer letter: I "In the table below, I will present the department’s formal award, which includes your payment of in-state tuition, UC Student Health Insurance Program (UCSHIP) premiums, and fees for your first year, as well as four years of employment as a departmental Teaching Assistant starting your 2nd year. This employment will provide you with support in the form of a salary and cover UCSHIP premiums, tuition, and fees in every year that you work as a Teaching Assistant. Your non-resident tuition ($15,102) during the first year will not be covered." tl;dr the offer is you pay $15,102 out-of-state tuition 1st year (but they pay health insurance, which is important in beautiful USA), then years 2-5 you receive average stipend of $23,745 (actually $21273 in 2nd year). They require 3.30 GPA and full enrollment and also expect you to apply for the university scholarships (Graduate summer research mentorship $6,000, Graduate research mentorship program $20,000 +tuition and fees, and Dissertation year fellowship $20,000 +tuition and fees). Offer letter received 3/8/19; open house is 4/7-4/8 (not funded). I will likely decline. Good luck everyone.

TPB: They are poor. A student there told me they are encouraging all student to finish in 5 years because they do not have money to fund a student in the sixth year. Considering the normal now is finish with 6 years, I consider this a good reason to no go there

Jeez, is any of the admitted students going to accept? Why does UCLA seem so unattractive?

I'm just anticipating my rejection, based on the pattern of previous rejections by other schools. I would most likely decline — all the more so that UCLA's first batch already includes offers without non-resident tuition coverage. I was also admitted to a slightly less well ranked program, with at least as good placement, better funding, and a better match with my interests. Best of luck to all!

I was the accept from below. I got it at 3:35 PST. It was an email addressed to me with an offer letter attached. It was from their general admit account and not a specific professor. My last initial is first half of alphabet and I’m a CA res. 7a/1w/3p/6r

Utterly mediocre GPA from top 20-ish school. Very good GRE and a few papers.
